The “Constitution of 3 May 1791” project
The students of our school from the pre-DP2 class and the students of Stefan Batory’s Secondary School have been engaged in a dispute over the Constitution of 3 May 1791 for eight months. Initially 2slo’s students argued that the king was guilty of contributing to the fall of the Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth and suggested that the authors of the Constitution of 3 May should had been inspired by the Constitution of the Year I passed in 1793.
On November 29, 2021, the king “stood” trial. Our students accused him of high treason and of causing the collapse of the state.
The audience, in the form of the pre-DP2 students, teachers and on – line viewers from Batory’s Secondary School, came to the trial. The jury consisted of six representatives of 2slo and six representatives of Batory. Some people were called as witnesses by the court. Due to the
six- to six jury vote, the court eventually dismissed the suit and no charges were brought against the king.
After the trial, students acting as witnesses changed their roles and presented a performance on the Constitution of 3 May, with the use of the “Constitution of 3 May” painting by Jan Matejko.
In summary, the participants involved in the project not only acquired knowledge and skills, or experienced group work, but also had a great time! Everyone recalls the cooperation with pleasure, with particular appreciation for the project supervisor Agnieszka Antonina Siatkowska. (text by Beata Ciacek based on Agnieszka Siatkowska’s account)
